Breathing life into a policy-heavy script to create something bright, clear, and genuinely engaging for the folks at Rethinking Assessment.

The Project

Rethinking Assessment, with backing from the Edge Foundation and Big Education, wanted to make a solid case for shaking up the current assessment system. The goal was to move the conversation beyond a narrow focus on exams and introduce a richer way of recognising young people’s true strengths.

The video needed to highlight fresh ideas like digital learner profiles, creative thinking, project work, and a much broader look at what kids can actually do.

The Team

This one was a proper collaborative effort. I teamed up with the cracking folks at Fat Panda, who developed the creative direction, storyboard, voiceover planning, and production approach. The brilliant Kyle Prior was on illustration duties, crafting all the character-led artwork.

The Work

My role was to take the approved storyboard and artwork and get it all moving. I handled the animation and motion design for the campaign, which involved:

  • Bringing the artwork to life: Taking Kyle’s character-led illustrations and shaping the movement, transitions, and overall flow.

  • Pacing the animation: Working around a fairly information-rich script to make sure the viewer had time to digest the core message.

  • Visualising the abstract: Animating abstract and symbolic visuals around the school experience, learner profiles, and personal strengths.

  • Wrapping it up: Tying it all together and incorporating the final branded end screen.

The Challenge

When you're dealing with a policy-heavy subject, it can easily get bogged down. The main challenge here was using smart movement and transitions to make complex ideas feel straightforward, clear, and engaging.

On top of that, there were quite a few stakeholders involved in this one. That meant juggling a fair bit of feedback and keeping everything coherent along the way. The project had gone through a long development and storyboarding process before it reached my desk, so my job was to take all that hard graft and polish it into something that felt vibrant and alive on screen.
